The 3 Body Problem | KT Review

Obviously I’m totally engrossed, 3 Body Problem just arrived on Netflix and I’m already obsessed. The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin is not a book I have read, and I don’t think I’ve even come across it before. Probably because, although I do read Sci-Fi, I rarely read aliens or space. Which is strange, because I enjoy watching aliens and space.

The book, The Three-Body Problem, is the first in a trilogy called Remembrance of Earth’s Past. In the book, a Chinese scientist makes contact with an alien race called the Trisolarans from the Alpha Centauri System. And I think I’m going to add it to my wishlist on Amazon but I don’t think I’ll manage to read it before the series starts!

I think part of what is pulled me into the 3 Body Problem was that I had no idea what to expect, but the trailers were intriguing enough to make me want to know. Dramatic enough to make me want to watch. And felt both outlandish and possible at the same time. After all, we do keep sending signals into space. And if there is other life out there, which there most likely is, and if they’re more advanced than us (which wouldn’t be totally surprising but would be essential for them to make it to us in the first place), maybe they would come to earth. Maybe they’ve already visited, infiltrated the population to see what we’re up to and decided we’re not ready yet. I mean, they’ve probably already watched all our movies and know how we’re going to react. Maybe they’re already answering our signals as this series suggests. And maybe I got distracted there for a moment and should get back to the point.

A fateful decision made in 1960s China reverberates in the present, where a group of scientists partner with a detective to confront an existential planetary threat.

3-Body Problem, IMDb

The cast is incredible, familiar faces mixed with many I haven’t seen before. We’ve got Game of Thrones familiars, Jonathan Price, Liam Cunningham, and John Bradley. Benedict Wong from the Marvel Universe. Alex Sharp from The Hustle. Eiza González from Bloodshot and Baby Driver. A new face (at least to me) with Zine Tseng. Saamer Usmani who you might recognise from Inventing Anna. Sea Shimooka from Arrow. Jovan Adepo who played Jack in To Catch A Killer. Marlo Kelly from Home and Away. And Jess Hong as Jin Cheng.

I love the way the different characters are reacting to the situation, and their lives outside of the situation, everyone is very distinct and yet completely human -some of the simplest things, like cheesy twirls, and giving this series so much more depth than I was expecting. Almost a familiarity.

So grab yourself a bag, and sit down to watch, I highly recommend this Netflix series!
