The Pale Horseman Review

The Pale Horseman

Author of the book: Bernard Cornwell

Okay so I don’t write many reviews and I can rarely figure out what to say. Especially when I don’t want to write entire pages of my opinion – that’s what blogs are for right? Just kidding. I was lucky enough to win a copy of The Pale Horseman.

I really do love the way Bernard Cornwell writes. There’s something about the smoothness of his writing that keeps you reading. At no point are you jerked out of the story, not even in the middle of the action or emotional parts. And he has this strange ability to teach you things without you noticing -Which is a great talent in any writer. Of course he’s had a few years to perfect his craft but I’m never disappointed by any book of his I pick up.

I will admit to talking out loud to the book though. ‘No, don’t do it!‘ or ‘Remember what you were told about Ubba!

And I’ve been telling anyone who will listen to me for five minutes that they absolutely must watch the BBC series The Last Kingdom

The Pale Horseman (The Saxon Stories, #2)The Pale Horseman by Bernard Cornwell
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Won The Pale Horseman in a goodreads giveaway and was reading book 1 when it arrived. Perfect timing.
I just love the way they’re written, pulling you into the story and making you feel like you’re there. It’s strange knowing how close to some of the locations I live and how different they were then. I can’t wait to start the next book.
Highly recommend it for fans of historical novels and those who like forward moving action.

Should I compare it to Game of Thrones

As so many others have done? Well, I suppose I could but GoT is Fantasy based loosely on facts, maybe -and don’t get me wrong I love both the books and the TV series- but I’m a little fed up of waiting for the next book to be finished.

The Last Kingdom series is based in historical fact with a story of a conceivable character at the centre, whether that character is based on a real person doesn’t matter in the slightest. In perfect balance – the facts don’t overwhelm the story, they’re part of it, and the characters are brought to life in a way that you could believe they once lived the life depicted. Plus, you just know that Bernard Cornwell won’t leave us hanging.

If you’ve never read a Bernard Cornwell book before this series would be a great place to start.

Especially if you like good historical fiction with a story that’s constantly moving forward.
