With a limited release in the UK seeing this film has been a long time coming but finally I got to see The Shape of Water. And it was a really pleasant, fun, and intriguing film. Yes, I know, it’s not horror but it is about a monster. Or possibly a God. Who falls in love with a human woman, eats a cat, and has glowy bits. It’s a Romance, a fairytale, an adventure – with a monster or two.
The script is rather pleasing to read too if you’re into that kind of thing. And the movie doesn’t stray too far from it – I felt like I’d seen the movie when I’d read it and had to keep reminding myself I hadn’t. You can find it here if you’d like to read it.
The Shape of Water
Set in 1962, a mute janitor, Elisa, at a top-secret government research facility forms a relationship with a test subject after she and her co-worker discover the creature. The creature holds possibilities for the government who don’t want anyone else getting their hands on it. But when the creatures life comes under threat Elisa knows she must act to save the creatures life.
Starring Sally Hawkins (Maudie, Godzilla), Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures, Gifted), Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals, Waco), Richard Jenkins (Let Me In, Bone Tomahawk), Michael Stuhlbarg (Fargo, Doctor Strange), Doug Jones (Star Trek: Discovery, The Bye Bye Man), and directed by Guillermo del Toro.
The Shape of Water Review Conclusion
I will watch it again – The Shape of Water is a really enjoyable film, a little strange, a little damp, but beautifully shot with a kind of green tint to the whole movie which was pleasing. It’s not too complex and is a beautiful love story between two individuals who are very different who will do whatever they can to help the other.

When Alice invited her friends, Sarah, Paul, and Dave to stay in her Grandmother’s Romanian farmstead they were expecting to take a break from studying and have a good time. Of course, that wasn’t the only reason Alice was there but her friends didn’t need to be involved in that. And she could happily show them where her family was from. And the town where she had spent her summers without them ever suspecting anything.
But then they meet the hunter, the werewolves catch their scent, and Sarah reveals a secret that could end her friendship with Alice and spell disaster for all of them.
