I had seen surprisingly little about The Ballad of Buster Scruggs by the Coen Brothers, I knew when it was due on Netflix but that was about it. The Coen Brothers have made many great films. True Grit, No Country for Old Men, and The Big Lebowski to name but a few. So, I had no worries going in. And with a host of familiar faces (as well as some surprises), hilarious lines, and strange characters you’re bound to see yourself as one of them – at least a little bit.

Six unrelated stories that each deal with an aspect of life in the old west. Being an outlaw, a prospector, a bank robber, on a wagon train heading for a new life, or a coach heading for the…well, I’ll let you watch and see. No spoilers.

James Franko (The Duece, The Vault), Liam Neeson (Taken, The Commuter), Tom Waits (Seven Psychopaths, The Imaginarium, of Doctor Parnassus), Zoe Kazan (The Big Sick, The Duece), Brendan Gleeson (Calvary, Cold Mountain), Saul Rubinek (The Last Tycoon, True Romance), and the one that surprised me the most (and yes I know he’s done more than just Harry Potter) -Harry Melling (Harry Potter, Harry Potter, Harry Potter).
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs Review Conclusion
Yes, I will most definitely be watching this again – It’s funny, quirky, a little bit twisted, and a pleasant afternoon’s watching. The final story takes a dark turn, but, to be fair, it’s not the only one. They each have a moment where it has most definitely ended for someone. But you gotta pay attention. If you get distracted during one of the stories you could get a little lost. It’s easy out there on the prairie where everything looks the same and it goes on as far as the eye can see. This is not a serious western, it’s fun and funny. Give it a go.

I recommend a plate of beans and beef stew, with a coffee so thick you can stand the spoon up in it. Okay, so my coffee is never that thick but I did have beans and minced beef while I watched.
