A psychological thriller
I am the Pretty Thing that lives in the House stars Ruth Wilson, Bob Balaban, and Lucy Boynton and is a Netflix Original. When a nurse with a nervous disposition begins work in a new house she finds herself looking after an ailing novelist. The house is large with only the two of them in it and holds secrets she will soon find out.
It reminds me of the movies I used to watch with my grandparents on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Although seemingly slow it doesn’t take long for things to start to happen, the nervous nurse not ideally suited to living in a big creaky house with only an old lady for company. I am the Pretty Thing that lives in the House keeps giving more and more clues to the nature of the secrets in small, seemingly insignificant, doses. Until eventually it all get too much for the nurse.
There does seem to be a trend for slower horror movies lately which takes me back to the old black and whites. Slow scenes meant to build up the shock value of the more intense scenes. But I do feel a little as though, with such short attention spans (we’re essentially goldfish), these films need to be careful not to take it too far. However, unlike The Neon Demon (which I reviewed recently), this film really makes them work. And if you are looking for something to watch on a dark and dreary winter weekend this might be just the thing.
I am the Pretty Thing that lives in the House Review Conclusion
I’d watch it again on a rainy afternoon whilst curled under a blanket – I enjoyed watching I am the Pretty Thing that lives in the House, although it wasn’t particularly horrific or jumpy. It’s a nice gentle, little bit dark, get under the skin, introduction to the genre. Particularly if you like your supernatural films.
