If I’m being totally honest, I haven’t had the motivation to write anything but my blog for quite some time now. There are two works in progress on my computer, stories I’ve enjoyed writing so far and reading back, but I just don’t feel the need to continue with them. I did finish a Hallmark/Mystery/Horror short a few months ago. It’s waiting to be edited, with the intention of releasing it as the Christmas free read, but I can’t even find the motivation for that.
I have more of an urge to write a script, but nothing in mind at the moment, and quite honestly, I don’t really have the time to focus on it when I work a day job. And I know, many people will be screaming at the screen saying “If you really wanted to do it, you’d make time!” and stuff like that but really need the time for rest on the weekends. And the last holiday I took from work, a time when I would usually sit down at the keyboard and write for hours, was about resting. I really needed a ‘do nothing at all’ holiday.
So, for the time being, I’m not writing. I’m taking a break from it, getting back to me, and focusing on the blog and figuring out what I want to do. But that doesn’t stop the ideas from popping up, an opening line, an aesthetic, a character. So I make notes and move on, maybe I’ll come back to them later.
Watching 1883
This series reminds me of a book I read long ago. This Calder Range, I think it was called. It’s churning up some thoughts. That was the life I’d always yearned after. I watched so many westerns as a kid, and they were the reason I went to work with horses when I left school. So, I really enjoyed this series, and who doesn’t love a show with Sam Elliot in? Familiar names, the dusty trail, the difficulties, and the disagreements, all kept me engrossed -even if they sometimes felt a little borrowed.
But I’ve never been able to get into Yellowstone, and I’ve tried a few times, but it just doesn’t keep me interested. Which is annoying, because I really wanted to enjoy it. So, the question becomes, do I watch 1923? And if you’re into westerns but can’t get in to Yellowstone either, maybe you should try 1883. You might just like it as much as I did.
Halloween in Whitby
Can you think of a spookier place to spend Halloween than Whitby? The home (or one of them, anyway) of Dracula. The location of the recent vampire film The Radleys. And the haunting grounds of many a ghoul. You could visit the lit up abbey from October 24th until November 2nd. The Ruins look amazing all lit up, and you’ll be able to take a journey into a nightmare world of Victorian Gothic with the Time Will Tell Theatre Group. Just watch your step, there are a few places were open stone graves might just grab an ankle and cast you to the ground (I found out the hard way).
And there’s always the popular ghost tours:
Who knows, maybe I’ll see you over there. I love visiting Whitby at this time of year, especially when there’s a sea fret rolling in, and bells ring somewhere on the water.
