Could it really be true? I don’t know how to feel about this. I loved that movie. Will they capture the pure weirdness of it or soften the whole thing up like they do with most other reboots?
Let’s compare stats! Or we would, if we knew much about the reboot. It’s in the early stages. So far, we know Neill Blomkamp will write and direct. He has previously directed District 9, Chappie, and Elysium, so you could say he’s had a little experience with out-of-this-world movies.

And the reboot will, apparently, draw from the original military story of the novel rather than the fascist story the movie below went with. Robert Heinlein’s novel Starship Troopers was published in 1959. And won the Hugo Award for best novel in 1960. You can grab yourself a copy here on Amazon. But the movie itself didn’t do so well when it was first released.
I definitely think the younger generations need to watch the 1997 movie. The characters are larger than life, with so many twisted story elements that make it extra fun. The alien bugs are more messy than scary so there’s no real horror element -for the viewer anyway. And unlike most alien movies, where they’re discovered and then there’s an element of will they be friendly or are we going to war, in Starship Troopers you’re already going to war with them and it’s inevitable that you or people you know will go to fight them in one way or another. I’m talking myself into rewatching the original here!
Humans, in a fascist militaristic future, wage war with giant alien bugs.
