If you don’t believe in the Hogfather he won’t come
It’s the night before Hogswatch when the Hogfather should be filling his sleigh, putting the boar into the traces, and making his merry way across the skies to deliver gifts to all those lovely well behaved children. But there’s a problem. The Hogfather is missing. And if the Hogfather doesn’t deliver the presents, the sun won’t rise on Hogswatch.
Susan is tasked with finding the Hogfather, whilst her Grandfather, Death, steps into the big red suit to deliver the presents. Because, naturally, he knows where everyone lives too.
Starring David Jason (Only Fools and Horses, A Touch of Frost), Nigel Planer (The Young Ones, Episodes), Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey, Non-Stop), Marc Warren (Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, Snatch TV Series) , Tony Robinson (Blackadder, Time Team), and Ian Richardson (From Hell, House of Cards) as the voice of Death.
The Hogfather was one of Pratchett’s best **Spoilers Ahead**
In my humble opinion anyway. I always liked the ones with Death in (and Rincewind). And a Christmas story with Death playing the Hogfather (the Discworld’s version of Santa) is just genius. Especially when you’ve seen just about every other Christmas story adaptation going.
Whilst technically not a movie, it is long enough to be a movie. A two part drama made for TV we first gathered around our screens to watch it during scheduled programming. Then rushed out to buy the DVD to watch again the following year -along with the next adaptation.
It’s got that beautiful darkness that Christmas should have, with humour, a little bit of chaos, and some definite threats to the known order to bring this story to life. But I have to question the pork pies – why leave out a pork pie for the Hogfather? Isn’t that a little like eating himself?
Hogfather Review Conclusion
I will watch it again – The Hogfather is a Christmas fav! It’s dark, a little bit messed up, but great fun, and even the kids can watch it. Everyone should watch it.
