Music for your Dark Christmas

The right music makes all the difference

Every year I find myself looking for the dark Christmas songs. It’s much easier to write Christmas stories to (that’s for sure) and I’ve always had a feeling that Christmas should be darker than it is. And each year I consider my options for tree decorating and decide that this year it’s going to look classy but dark – and every year it looks more like a bunch of randomly selected five year old’s decorated it.

Anyway back to the music…it took a while and some assistance from my daughter (she’s into Creepy Pasta) to find what I wanted. I now have two play lists, some of the songs cross over and one is a little lighter than the other, but it’s good writing music – and good tree decorating music (although I suspect there’ll never be a set of musical lights dancing to these tunes).

Dark Christmas Parties

And those times you have to entertain but don’t want to just throw on all those familiar Christmas tunes. A darkly decorated table, with fabulously rich foods, tall glasses, this music playing – decadent for sure and a party few will soon forget.

And so naturally that meant I also needed to spend a little time on Pinterest putting the feel of the dark Christmas party into images.

I don’t want to fill my Christmas with horror related decorations. I want the feel of a dark Christmas, the luxury and richness, not gimmicky (although I really like the Nightmare Before Christmas decorations and I’ve seen a very cool Cthulhu), but a pleasure for the senses. Unfortunately what my brain wants is rarely what it gets.

Older carols

I did some digging into lyrics whilst I was searching and discovered that those nice carols we hear, played on a loop in the shops every year, have hidden darkness. (If you follow my Instagram or Twitter you’ll have already seen me sharing some of the lyrics.)

But for those who don’t, here are the ones I found for you to share and enjoy. I’d love to hear of any others you know.

What dark Christmas traditions do you follow?

Do you hide your brooms or fill your boots with hay and put them by the door?

Tell us what you do for Christmas that other people might find a little strange? Whether it’s a custom that’s been passed down only through your family, or something your whole town does, share in the comments and lets see who has the strangest tradition.
