The Neon Demon | Thriller | KT Review

The Neon Demon

Starring Elle Fanning, Jena Malone, Bella Heathcote, Abbey Lee Kershaw, & Keanu Reeves. The Neon Demon is about a young woman played by Elle Fanning who moves to L.A. with dreams of becoming a model. It doesn’t take her long to start getting attention which is resented by the other, older, models. Staying in a motel room rented from Hank (Keanu) she soon discovers he has a side business with other young girls staying there. And fearing he is trying to get into her room she runs to the one person she feels has been a kind of friend to her.

I was kinda excited for this film, not only did it have Keanu in but I’d previously watched Only God Forgives by the same director, Nicolas Winding Refn, and really enjoyed it. And I have to say I love films that are deeply visual and visceral. But….but….

It was slow. I kept getting distracted. When things were happening you almost couldn’t look away. But the posing and waiting in between the action was almost too much – some scenes like this felt necessary whilst others felt excessive.

The Neon Demon still had me though

What I did like was the weirdness. Is it weird if I say the movie felt 1D? It was so on the surface – no depth to any emotion. And that worked to keep me guessing and curious. I think it’s going to be a movie I hate to love. Already thinking about watching it again.

The Neon Demon Review Conclusion

I’ll probably watch it again – Whilst I did find it a little slow moving it was still an enjoyable watch. Love the bright lights and colours feel against the twisted images and scenes.
