Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight (and his eighth movie) is set sometime after the Civil War. Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Tim Roth, Bruce Dern, Michael Madsen, and Demián Bichir (eight stars). And whilst not scary, it does contain a lot of gore – it’s a Tarantino, what did you expect? So…
Bounty Hunter John Ruth is taking his captive Daisy Domergue to Red Rock to bring her to justice. But the weather is getting bad and they just ain’t gonna make it. But…
Before they make it to Minnie’s Haberdashery (on the way to Red Rock, a sort of stage coach stop where they can wait out the storm) they meet Major Warren transporting his own bounties, but minus a horse. And the new Sheriff (or so he says) of Red Rock. But it ain’t until they get to the haberdashery that things start to go awry.
Like most Tarantino movies I had to watch it more than once to see everything, and fully grasp what was going on. For example, the first time around I totally missed the point where Major Warren begins to get suspicious. So a few things afterwards didn’t make total sense. But the second time around I found myself saying ‘Ah!’ and ‘Ooh’ a lot.
Now, I love westerns, and I have no objection to copious amounts of gore. But…
I sort of felt this movie was a little slow – yes, I know, they’re in a one roomed building, with a bit of a trek to the outhouse in blizzard conditions, and they ain’t going to be going out of their way to exert much energy. So, it was, by necessity, quite slow in places. However, the second time around was better than the first, and I could easily listen to Tarantino read audio books to me all night (you’ll understand after you’ve watched it, if you haven’t already).
The Hateful Eight Review Conclusion
I already watched it again – more western than horror this movie gives good gore. It’s not a chore to watch a Tarantino movie in any genre but you gotta be paying attention. I’m giving it 4.5 out of 5 because I did find some scenes to be slower than necessary. But I’ll definitely be watching it again despite that.
