Hostiles -A Lot Can Change | KT Review

There’s nothing like a good western to while away the hours. Hostiles is a good long western that will see you comfortably through the afternoon. Violent in parts, full of feels in others, and an engaging watch.

Hostiles

The Hostiles cast sees Christian Bale (Batman Begins, American Hustle) don an Army Captain uniform and reluctantly agree to escort an ailing Cheyenne Chief played by Wes Studi (Penny Dreadful, The Red Road) through dangerous territory back to their home. They are accompanied by the Chief’s son, David Midthunder (Westworld, Longmire), daughter, and his son’s family.

Their escort includes soldiers played by Jesse Plemons (Game Night, Black Mass), Rory Cochrane (Argo, A Scanner Darkly), and Jonathan Majors (White Boy Rick, When We Rise). And before they’ve even got very far they encounter a Mrs Quaid, played by Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl, Jack Reacher), whose family has been very recently massacred.

Hostiles Review Conclusion

I would watch it again – Rather long, this western gives you a sense of how long it would have taken to get across the open country on horseback. And all the difficulties you might encounter along the way. It is not a highly involving western, there are action moments and feeling moments and it has a lot of those long slow conversations that westerns are often guilty of. Why talk fast when there’s nothing rushing you? The most interesting part of this western is the character changes resulting from their circumstances, how each feels towards the others at the beginning compared to how they feel at the end. It’s an interesting journey and a pleasant, if at times violent, watch.

4 Stars

As always with a western my first thought is a hot pot of coffee and bowl of beef and bean casserole. You’ll need something hearty to see you through the 2+ hours of film.
