Apostle – Twisted, gory, and surprising | KT Review

Apostle had me curious but not rushing to add it to my list of things to watch, and then I saw the reviews (and ravings) of others who had seen it, filling my twitter feed. So I sidelined (the amazing) Haunting of Hill House for the night and I’m so glad I did. A brilliant, deceptive, movie that has a splash of gore and a twisted tale to tell. It might start out a period piece but this is not a Sunday afternoon watch with granny – unless she’s really got a dark side.

Apostle

When he’s told his sister is missing, Thomas Richardson travels to a remote island with rescue in mind. And whilst trying to blend in with the locals, discovers a mysterious religious cult who want money for her safe return. As they begin to suspect him he starts to dig deeper into their beliefs and discovers the discovers the secrets on which the commune is built.

Starring Dan Stevens (Legion, Beauty and the Beast), Richard Elfyn (The Crown, Keeping Faith), Paul Higgins (Utopia, Line of Duty), Bill Milner (The Lodgers, Dunkirk), Catrin Aaron (The Indian Doctor, The Bastard Executioner), Kristine Froseth (The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair, Sierra Burgess is a Loser), and Mark Lewis Jones (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Child 44).

Apostle Review Conclusion

I would watch it again – Whilst it starts out dark and with as much knowledge of what he’s heading into as the character himself, you don’t immediately get a horror feel with this movie. It’s a dark, somewhat violent and cruel, period piece. And then, quite suddenly, it turns on you. A really good watch.

4.5 Stars

You can go ahead and turn the lights out with this one, it might not seem necessary at first but it’s totally worth it. Popcorn, a big ‘not moving from my seat‘ kinda drink, and maybe a blanket. This one actually infected my dreams!
